iSlide

It is a promising extension to view a large number of images on a web page. On a web page where one or more images are shown in thumbnail, clicking on this extension will start a slide show of images in full sizes. The extension also supports multiple hot keys to configure slideshow. It also displays a preview of you tube video in a light box style. The extension currently does not support Flickr or Facebook but these web sites will be supported in upcoming updates.

zoomZOOM

In your daily browsing, you come across a number of images which are displayed in thumbnails. If you want to see all the images at once in full size then you should use iSlide. In other case when one or more images have to be previewed in large sizes then this extensions works perfect in Google Chrome. It supports many popular web sites like Facebook, Flickr, deviantart, and many more.

Image Preview

It is a sort of same extension like the extension mentioned above. This extension provides a preview of image in a light box. Additionally, the image can be zoomed for a large display. This extension also works in the same way for You Tube video links.

Pats Flickr App

If your are in search of extension that can extend the default functionality of Flickr and can modify its interface for user convenience then this extension is for you. Default Way to Empty New Tab in Google Chrome

URL stands for abbreviation of Uniform Resource Locator which is the global address of web pages, documents or other services. It consists of two main parts: one is protocol identifier and second is document address in from of domain name or IP. They are separated by a colon “:” and two forward slashes “//”. A click on the icon will short the URL according to preferences. This short URL is automatically placed in clipboard and can be pasted anywhere. The notable URL shortening services which can be chosen are bit.ly, is.gd, and TinyURL.

If you browse to a web page where shortened URLs are present, this extension will involuntarily expand the URLs. The titles and destination are shown when you move mouse cursor over the short URL.

You can configure ChromeMUSE to show a list of desired URL shortening services when you click the icon. Besides, the extension can be set to replace the short URL with actual URL after expansion.

URLShortener
This is another extension which allows URL shortening along with support to post on Twitter directly. It means that it is a kind of mini twitter client for Google Chrome. You can use popular URL shortening services like bit.ly, goo.gl, tinyURL, and is.gd. The services can be selected from extension’s options. If you want to link it with Twitter, the credentials have to be provided in options.

Untiny
If you are only interested in expansion of short URL to avoid any harmful effect like Phishing then this extension is for you. You need paste the short URL in the extension input box then the URL will expanded and will show you the destined web page.

If you are happy with only one popular URL shortening services then you can stick with Bit.ly or goo.gl URL Shortener extensions. The decision is up to you which extension meets your needs in Google Chrome although I prefer ChromeMUSE.

Computer Mouse is really helpful for a normal computer user because it provides an easy way to navigate. It becomes even more convenient when browsing web. This extension works almost perfect. There are a plenty of already built gestures available. These gestures can be identified from extension’s options page and they are also customizable. Mouse Stroke supports and recognizes three types of gestures.

Simple Gesture: Draw a gesture by moving the mouse while pressing the right mouse button and then release
Scroll Gesture: Scroll the mouse wheel while pressing down right button
Rocker Gesture: Hold down either the right or left mouse button, and then press the other one.

The default mouse gestures provided by this extension are divided into three categories which are Page Navigation, Tab Management, and Miscellaneous. These mouse strokes almost will satisfy needs of any user. Any gesture can be disabled or modified. The modification is pretty straight forward.  When you will click on “+” sign, a canvas will be shown on which you can draw your own stroke for specified task. If the gesture already exists, it will show a warning. You can ignore it and over write the gesture or re draw.

Smooth Gestures has got some nice preferences which can be configured for your convenience. These preferences are

• The position of New Tab
• Color and Thickness of Mouse Trail
• Association of Right Click with Context Menu
• Selection of Right or Left Mouse Button for Gestures
• URL List for which Mouse Gestures will be Disabled

Chrome Gestures
This is another nice extension which can be used for performing Mouse Gestures in Google Chrome. It worked neatly on my stable release of Google Chrome but use it with a caution on Beta or Dev releases. This extension is also equipped with enhanced features.

Drag and Go for better navigation and quick searches can be enabled because it is disabled by default. The user can configure gestures for Text or Link selection. New gestures can be added easily and the task to be performed can be selected from a predefined list.

The list of basic gestures is available in Basic Tab. Obviously these can be edited and new can be added. The visualization of a mouse gesture is better in this extension when compare to earlier. When the user draws a stroke, the respective mouse movements in from of arrows are shown. If a valid mouse gesture is detected, the task specified with this gesture is also displayed. This mechanism assists users in early days when you can’t remember each gesture.

This extension also comes with a solution for smooth scrolling which is disabled on install but can be enabled on wards. The user needs to check “Mouse Wheel” box then the speed of smooth scroll and acceleration of scroll can be set accordingly.

Mouse Stroke
This is another alternative available to get benefit of Mouse Gestures in Google Chrome. This extension also comes up with a set of awesome features and options. It also supports and recognizes three types of mouse gestures like Smooth Gesture does. It is also equipped with Drag and Go support. Instead of visualizing arrows, it shows letters respective to mouse movements like L for Left, R for Right, U for Up and D for Down. There are a plethora of built in gestures available for different tasks. The look of trail can also be modified. It will also let you change the position of new tab and web page to open in new tab.

The best available extensions to utilize the function of Mouse Gestures in Google Chrome have been described. These extensions also provide some extra features which are available as separate chrome extensions like Positioning of New tab and Drag and Go. Tabs Plus
This extension changes tab ordering of Google Chrome to work like Firefox. The behavior can be changed from options.  Position of New Tab can be fixed to Default, First, or Last. You can also opt whether to open new tab in background or foreground. If an active tab is closed, the tab which was used last time will get active. If a specific tab is required not to be considered as Last Used Tab, it can be excluded.

Tab Stack
It is a useful extension with nice feature which moves tabs in a way that they are always arranged in a Most Recently Used order from left to right. In this way, the most recent active tab is always at left of tab strip. When you will use Ctrl-Tab key combination to navigate through tabs, it will work like Alt-Tab combination in Windows. The most recently active tab will be visible.

It displays previews of all opened tabs. The thumbnails are filled as users gradually moves.  You can move tabs to suspended column which is frees the memory in use. Like many other extensions, it supports restoring closed tabs. It lets you arrange tabs with respect to title, creation time or domain.

Tab Jump
It is an awesome idea to implement as an extension for Google Chrome. While you have opened a lot of websites and wondering from where I opened the link and want to return, Tab Jump will let you easily find the related tab. It also figures out the tabs which are used frequently. You will never forget the related tab in a crowd of tabs. This extension also implements “Undo Close Tab” functionality. It recognizes the recently closed tabs and reopens them with a single click.

Sexy Undo Close Tab
If you are not interested to use the tab managing or previewing functionality of above Google Chrome’s extensions and need a simple tab restoring extension then you should try this. This extension has a simple interface and also shows the time since the tab is closed. In options, you can configure the maximum amount of tabs that are kept in memory. You can also disable the clear list or tab count feature which are enabled by default.

FreshStart
This extension is an elegant session manager for Google Chrome. You can save current windows which contains all opened tabs. Thus the windows with closed tabs can be opened any time later. This extension saves session in form of a bookmark. If bookmarks are synchronized through default option in Google Chrome or some other way, the session can be accessed on any other installation of Google Chrome which is also bookmark synched.These are some necessary extension to manage tabs in Google Chrome web browser. Like every modern application, Google Chrome Browser supports tweaking the browser look with custom themes. You will not get tired of looking at default look every day rather you can dress up your Chrome with a theme. Google Chrome team has provided an online themes gallery which contains some nice themes but their number is low. Chrome community has developed a number of themes which actually don’t appear in the official gallery. Themes are a type of customization applied to visual layout of a window which provides a more refreshing and sleek look. Modern applications tend to provide this extensibility so that users don’t get tired of dealing with default look at all. Themes can be considered as Dress of an application. Applications should also be dressed up properly and elegantly like we do. Google Chrome Browser had started supporting themes with release of version 3.0.

There are plenty of Chrome themes out there. Some of them are official while many are being contributed by user community. What if you don’t like any of them and want to build your own Chrome theme. A theme built by user itself will exactly match the customizations required and the user will get more satisfied. The theme built can also be shared in Chrome community and we may see some nice and refined themes. One more thing I can assure that once you have built one, you will not be able to resist the urge to package more and more Chrome themes. I will describe here some easy methods to create Chrome themes. Some have a simple features and an easy user interface to built a theme while other are comprehensive and let you create a theme in a detailed manner.

crx theme creator is an easy and free utility to build a customized Chrome theme. There are currently two versions available. Version 0.01 has an explanatory user interface in which a numbered Chrome window is shown as an image. The numbers are related to the input fields for background, toolbar, and tab images as well as colors for bookmarks, button, section and different text colors. Choose your options and then click “View Theme”. A Chrome window will open with your modified theme applied. The theme can be packaged in crx extension and can be released or shared.

crx theme creator v1.0 is newer version and gives you more customization options to build a Chrome theme. It does not offer numbered style options rather the creator needs to understand the Chrome Theme Creation Guide. You can create a fine tuned theme through this method but this involves more complexity.

During the wrtite up of this article, I also built my own Chrome Theme. This creation shows love for upcoming Ubuntu 10.01 code named Lucid Lynx. The theme has been released.

The above Chrome theme creators have a user interface. If the creator wants to build fine grained theme then should try one of the following methods.

In first method, the developedr will need Chromium Theme Creator and then copy some sort of dll and rc files in the working directory. After this, you will modify or create png images representing your design and then build a theme for release. (via ChromePlugins).
The second method requires you to first install Visual Studio C++ and Windows SDK. Then copying of some files is required. You need to modify or create png files and after that can build custom Chrome theme. (via Chromium Themes)

Backup of data that is used frequently is even more necessary. For Internet Surfers, it is essential to keep manage their web browser profile that holds bookmarks, passwords, and history. It may save a lot of time in many scenarios like switching workstations, reinstalling browser or operating system. A possible solution is to use a portable version of the browser which doesn’t require any installation and the user profiles can be carried in a portable device along with browser.

As Chorme is fresh web browser, there is no official portable version available. Even if a portable version is available, the users tend to perform a fresh installation of the application. In order to backup the user profile, bookmarks, passwords, and extensions of Google Chrome browser, following solutions can be used.

The easiest solution to backup everything related to your Chrome profile is to just copy and save your default user data directory. The directory location depends upon your operating system. The locations of default directory can be found here. I backed up the user directory and performed a complete erase of Chrome. After reinstalling, I just over wrote the new user data directory and got back my bookmarks, history, extensions, passwords, theme, and visited links.

Favbackup by FavBrowser is a nice solution to backup the whole user profile of Chrome at once. Alternatively, you can choose the specific user data of Chrome to backup exclusively like bookmarks, cookies, sessions, tabs, extensions, preferences, history, thumbnails and many more. There is also a full backup option which provides a comprehensive Chrome backup. The software is portable and works on Windows 7/Vista/XP/2000. It can be downloaded from developer’s website.

Google Chrome Backup from Parhelia Tools is a free utility to back the user data of Chrome. The backup wizard is pretty simple and guides you to the backup process. The whole user profile can be backed up only although it is possible to save multiple browsing profiles and they can be launched from the process. It also offers the functionality to backup Chromium as well. A single file with .gcb extension is generated and can be restored with ease. The utility is available here.

There are two built-in options in Chrome to hold your Bookmarks solely. The user can synchronize bookmarks with Google Bookmarks account and they can be later retrieved in Chrome. The alternative way is to export bookmarks in an html file using Bookmark Manager. This html file can be used to import bookmarks in Chrome.

Lastpass is an important extension for Chrome which can backup user’s passwords more securely and they can be restored in Chrome or any other supported browser.
ChromePasswordDecryptor is a tool which can be used to recover and backup passwords saved by Chrome password manager. This file can not be restored in Chrome.

There are many solutions to perform Chrome backup but I would vote in the favor of 1^st method which copies and replaces the user data directory of Chrome and restores everything. Tell us your experience.
