Apple has released iOS 4.2 GoldMaster candidate to developers which means that official iOS 4.2 release is days away and even may drop before 7th November. We earlier reported that recent redsn0w 0.9.6 b2 can jailbreak iOS 4.2 beta 3 on all iOS devices that include iPhone 4 3GS 3G, iPod Touch 4G 3G 2G and iPad as it incorporates Limera1n. iPhone Dev Team’s vocal member, MuscleNerd has confirmed that redsn0w can also jailbreak iOS 4.2 GM candidate on all iOS devices but with some bugs.
Here is the official note about 4.2 jailbreak with redsn0w. Read it Carefully.
Today Apple released to developers the GM seed for 4.2. Tinkerers will find that yesterday’s redsn0w jailbreaks today’s 4.2 GM seed, simply by pointing redsn0w at the 4.1 IPSW (rather than the 4.2 one). Right now it mostly only makes sense for JB app developers to do that because many apps (including Cydia itself) need to be updated for 4.2. However, if all you want to do is enable afc2 (to use iFunBox or other file browsers), or to tweak settings like Battery % and Homescreen wallpapers, then go for it (if you have valid paid access to the GM seed). Be sure to uncheck the Cydia box, though! Ultrasn0w unlockers should stay very far away from this!!
Note: Cydia has not yet been updated to work with iOS 4.2. Therefore, only adventurous users or app developers should proceed.
Caution: You must uncheck Cydia box otherwise it may create some annoying problems as Cydia does not work with 4.2 jailbreak for now.
- Download redsn0w 0.9.6 b2 for Windows or MAC. [Link]
- Download iOS 4.2 GM and iOS 4.1/iOS 3.2.2 for your iDevice.
- Upgrade your device to iOS 4.2 GM.
- Run redsn0w and direct it to iOS 4.1 firmware.

- Next, you can choose options to be installed along with jailbreak. Cydia box should be unchecked as directed by MuscleNerd.

- Before clicking next, make sure the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad is off and plugged into system.

- Follow the instruction to enable DFU mode on the device.
Hold Power button and while holding Power button Hold Home Button for 10 seconds.
After Few seconds release Power button while still Holding Home Button.
Release Home button when Installation begins.
After redsn0w finished installation, the device would restart and it will have jailbroken iOS 4.2 on iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.
Update 5: Sn0wbreeze will likely support tethered iOS 4.2 jailbreak for OTB device.
Update 4: Cydia Update will be pushed after iOS 4.2 is revealed in public.
Update 3: iPhone Dev Team asks to prepare for iOS 4.2 Jailbreak and Unlock.
Update 2: Cydia is saving SHSH Blobs of iOS 4.2 Beta for untethered jailbreak.
Update 1: Early untethered 4.2 jailbreak will be a treat for those who have saved SHSH Blobs. [How TO]
