Redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta1 was released jailbreak iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G on iOS 4.1. According to iPhone Dev Team, it would work for users who try to jailbreak iOS 4.2 beta on iPhone 3G or iPod Touch 2G but there are SOME BUGS in it. Therefore, only developers should try to jailbreak iPod Touch 4.2 for some testing.
Redsn0w 0.9.6 should support to jailbreak both iPod Touch 2G MB and MC models on iOS 4.2 but there is a difference. iPod Touch 2G MB models on 4.2 firmware will be untethered jailbroken while iPod Touch 2G MC Models on 4.2 firmware will be tethered jailbroken. Tethered Jailbreak means that you have to plug iPod Touch into computer every time it needs to be restarted for some reason.
Caution: This guide is intended for developers who have UDID to get iOS 4.2 Beta. Redsn0w 0.9.6 B1 is buggy for iOS 4.2. Proceed at your OWN.
- Your system must have latest iTunes. [Link]
- Download Redsn0w 0.9.6 b1 for Windows or MAC.
- Download iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.2 Beta and place in same folder.
- Upgrade iPod Touch 2G to iOS 4.2 Beta.
- Execute Redsn0w and point it to respective iOS 4.1 firmware and click Next. [Remember it is iOS 4.1].
- Now select the options you want to install along with Cydia and Battery Percentage.
- Switch Off iPod Touch and plug into computer
- iPod Touch should be running in DFF Mode. For that
Hold Power button and while holding Power button Hold Home Button for 10 seconds.
After Few seconds release Power button while still Holding Home Button.
Release Home button when Installation begins.
Now redsn0w will take over. Once installation is finished, iPod Touch would restart.You have now iPod Touch 2G running 4.2 jailbroken and might contains some bugs.
Update 9: Sn0wbreeze will likely support tethered iOS 4.2 jailbreak for OTB device.
