Finally, Apple has released iPod Touch 4.1 firmware after one week as promised at 1st September’s Apple Event. iPod Touch 4.1 update is specially worthy for iPod Touch 2G users who want to experience Game Center although it was previously neglected.
Update: You can now jailbreak any iPod Touch on 4.1 firmware with Greenpois0n.
Warning: Some people are complaining that there is no Wi-Fi connectivity using redsn0w. Proceed at your own risk. This only works successfully with beta.
Update: Sn0wbreeze 2.0 will be released in a day or two and will jailbreak 2G 4.1 without problems. So wait for the release and don’t try this SOLUTION

iPod Touch 4.1 update has been available since months as it was being seeded to developers who can also test the changes being brought and also get feedback for its performance on iPod Touch 2G. Since many iPod Touch 2G [Non MC Models] has old bootrom which can be easily jailbroken and Apple hasn’t patched it. In short, iPod Touch 2G Non MC model is “Pwned4life”.
Redsn0w has been traditionally able to jailbreak iPod Touch 2G and same is the case iPod Touch 2G running on 4.1. Redsn0w 0.9.5 supports to jailbreak iPod Touch 2G since 4.0 firmware and jailbreaking iPod Touch 4.1 is also no issue.
Here is a step by step tutorial on how to jailbreak iPod Touch 2G running 4.1 firmware. Before moving, you will need following material.
Download iOS 4.0 for iPod Touch 2G
Download iOS 4.1 for iPod Touch 2G
Download redsn0w 0.9.6 [Windows or MAC]
Step 1: Your iPod Touch should be running 4.1 firmware if it is not then update iPod Touch to 4.1.
Step 2: Execute redsn0w and select “Browse”. You have to select 4.0 firmware 4.1 firmware to proceed. [Remember it is 4.0 firmware]
Step 3: Continue by selecting Next and redsn0w will start preparing jailbreak data for iPod Touch.
Step 4: Now, select “Install Cydia” along with other options you want to enable on iPod Touch 2G running 4.1.
Step 5: Turn off your iPod Touch and plug in the device to computer.
Step 6: You have to bring DFU mode on iPod Touch.
- Hold Power button and while holding Power button Hold Home Button for 10 seconds.
- After Few seconds release Power button while still Holding Home Button.
- Release Home button when Installation begins.
Step 7: Your part is done and let redsn0w do the remaining. After installation is finished, iPod Touch will restart automatically. You have a jailbroken iPod Touch 2G running 4.1 firmware.

i have been jailbreaking since firmware 3.0 so I do not think i could have messed up the process.
i have an ipod touch 16gb 2G non-mc model and i jailbroke with the redsnow 0.9.5 beta 5. the jailbreak seems to work completely and the cydia starts fine however i can't connect to any network, I've tried four separate wireless networks. any thoughts? thanks in advance
I've had similar problems, but only on some networks, that were WPA2 Enterprise.. try resetting all network setting s to default and if it doesnt help, restore to 4.1 again.. the issue seems somehow connected to IPv4 vs. IPv6 addresses (although that's more a hunch of mine, than any official research).

I have the wireless problem too. I thought it was some problem with syncing so I tried resync but its not working.
Solution: Have to reset EVERYTHING and restore from back ups. But jailbroken is gone, too.
Let's just hope for redsnow to fix this issue
How do you reset everything? I try doing a restore and it always just says error.
On your iPod/iPhone: Settings > General > Reset > Reset all content and settings.
Try Reseting Network Settings first to see if it fixes the wifi issues first though.

I had the same problem about the network and I can´t turn of, but I have a solution!!! You need restore your ipod from itself. You need go to settings, select general, select reset, and finally "Erase al content and settings". You will lost all your information but your Ipod will be functional (sorry for my english, I will try to improve
)
The only problem with erasing it is that your ipod may still have the jailbreak, but in order to use it you have to connect it to iTunes, which, ultimately says you need to restore it in order to sync.

ok i installed 4.1, jailbroken with redsn0w using 4.0 file it worked, but i had no wifi, so i did a full wipe and reinstall on the ipod then half way through it crashes and enters recovery mode so i reinstall with itunes, cant someone edit the ipsw and install cydia manualy or something because this just dosent work correctly.

make sure when you have the option press save file not just open. then save it to desktop. when you are browsing for the file just drag the installed firmware from your desktop to whatever browse screen your on. then double click it. thats what i had to to.
