Jailbreak iPhone 3G 4.1 on Windows or MAC with redsn0w 0.9.6 [How To]

by EngineerHead on September 8, 2010

Finally, Apple has released iPhone 4.1 firmware after one week as promised at 1st September’s Apple Event. iPhone 4.1 update is specially worthy for iPhone 3G users who have been experiencing performance issues since iPhone 4.0 firmware. Steve has revealed before the event that 4.1 update will fix the buggy operation of iOS 4.0 on iPhone 3G.

Warning: Some people are complaining that there is no Phone App after using redsn0w. Proceed at your own risk. This only works successfully with beta.

Update: Sn0wbreeze 2.0 will be released in a day or two and will jailbreak 3G 4.1 without problems. So wait for the release and don’t try this SOLUTION

Update: redsn0w 0.9.6 has been updated to work with final release of 4.1 firmware. Go Ahead and Jailbreak iPhone 3G 4.1. [MAC Only]

Update: sn0wbreeze 2.0.1 has been released which jailbreaks iPhone 3G 4.1 on Windows.

iPhone 4.1 update has been available since months as it was being seeded to developers who can also test the changes being brought and also get feedback for iPhone 3G performance issue. Since iPhone 3G has old bootrom which can be easily jailbroken and Apple hasn’t patched it, iPhone 3G is “Pwned4life”.

Redsn0w has been traditionally able to jailbreak iPhone 3G and same is the case iPhone 3G 4.1 running on. Redsn0w 0.9.5 supports to jailbreak iPhone 3G since 4.0 firmware and jailbreaking iPhone 3G 4.1 is no issue.

Note: If you rely on ultrasn0w unlock, you SHOULD NOT update to iPhone 3G to 4.1 firmware as ultrasn0w exploit has been patched in 4.1 firmware. You would lose your unlock until Hackers manage a way to downgrade the baseband on iPhone 3G 4.1 or  a new baseband exploit is found. You can still jailbreak iPhone 3G.

Here is a step by step tutorial on how to jailbreak iPhone 3G running 4.1 firmware. Before moving, you will need following material.

Download iTunes 10

Download iOS 4.0 for iPhone 3G

Download iOS 4.1 for iPhone 3G

Download redsn0w 0.9.5

Download redsn0w 0.9.6

Step 1: Your iPhone 3G should be running 4.1 firmware if it is not then update first to 4.1.

Step 2: Execute redsn0w and select “Browse”. You have to select 4.0 firmware 4.1 firmware to proceed. [Remember it is 4.0 firmware]

Step 3: Continue by selecting Next and redsn0w will start preparing jailbreak data for iPhone.

Step 4: Now, select “Install Cydia” along with other options you want to enable on iPhone running 4.1.

Step 5: Turn off your iPhone and plug in the device to computer.

Step 6: You have to bring DFU mode on iPhone .

  • Hold Power button and while holding Power button Hold Home Button for 10 seconds.
  • After Few seconds release Power button while still Holding Home Button.
  • Release Home button when Installation begins.

Step 7: Your part is done and let redsn0w do the remaining. After installation is finished, iPhone will restart automatically. You have a jailbroken iPhone 3G running 4.1 firmware.

Note: If you see a white Cydia App it can be fixed as follows

Load the app and go to Manage>Sources>Add and add the following source http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7

After following these instructions, the phone app disappeared!!!

Does anyone know how to fix it? Or do I need to wait for the new version of redsn0w?

I had the exact same problem, the Phone icon disappear on the 4.1. I thought it was because of the wrong firmware, but I double checked and made sure that I was using 4.0. This doesn't appear to work right now, Cydia has no icon after the jailbreak as well.

I use no custom boot screen and no multi-tasking but did the battery percentage and the home screen wall paper.

I'm was able to restore to the stock 4.1, and the iphone is reset.

I will have to check and see if I backed up my SHSH, because I've been reading about a (soft) check for SHSH in 4.x firmware.

I would NOT recommend using this approach currently. RedSnow will need to be updated for this before you try this.

Same problem for me. However, Itunes won't let me restore to stock 4.1. I get an error message and i'm stuck in this state. Any ideas?

Try hooking your phone to iTunes and putting it into dfu mode. Worked for me when I was getting error 1602. If that don’t work try completely uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling from scratch (Internet suggestion).

If you go into
settings
general
reset
erase all content and settings

This will allow you to erase everything from you iphone and then you can restore in itunes.

hope this helps

Settle down folks ! I notice some of you have a problem restoring, and you have no Phone App after jailbreak. So to solve issue. You have 2 options if you have "SHSH's" on file with the problem tiny umbrella. Run that and put phone into DRU mode and click restore to downgrade or regular restore. If you don't have SHSH's then go DFU mode and put 4.1 back on phone.

Thank you so much! I freaked a little when I couldn't even restore normally. Here are instructions for anyone who needs a reminder about DFU mode: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=10…

I feel gypped by this update! I thought I was at least getting HDR photos (my iPhone is my only camera right now), but it turns out that is iPhone 4 only!! >:-(

I look forward to getting my jailbreak back, at least….

I had the same problem,go to "settings" + "general" + "reset" + "erase all content and settings" You lose everything you had before but you can then use the "restore" feature in Itunes. If you had backed up your phone to your computer prior to jailbreaking, you can restore your backup. Hope this helps.

I do not reccomend this jailbreak if you are doing it on an Iphone 3g iOS 4.1 (Final version 8/september/2010), it removes the phone app, so i could not make any call. I could recieve a call but i could not hear anything. I guess this works on ipods, but sure and sincerily not for iphones. Wait for another jailbreak, i will do that. it was nice to see the multitask just for about an hour.

Redsn0w 0.9.5b5 no longer properly jailbreaks 4.1
Something happened between the 4.1beta and 4.1 release
if you did this you cannot go back and RESTORE until you put your phone into DFU mode.
Hold the power & home until screen goes completely black, then release power and continure holding home until itunes ipod window pops up. Now you can RESTORE a clean 4.1 again

Reply

Gordon September 10, 2010 at 12:16

If you’re unable to get into dfu mode like me, another method mentioned earlier that I used was to go into settings, general, reset, and reset all contents. Then iTunes will know your phone is in restore mode and allow you to restore.

Btw, unjailbroken on ios4.1 right now and it’s a lot faster :)

same problems, i went to messages app and hit 'call' but speaker was automatically on and could not hear anything but the time on the call was displayed so seemed as if it connected. people trying to call me says it goes strait to answerphone. also if you try to switch off (holding power button and swiping 'slide to power off' it just seemingly resprings???!!! odd.. am going to try dfu mode to restore back to 4.0.1…

Hi guys. I know this stupid but i wanna know if i can update my iphone 3G running 2.1 to 3.1.2 only? i really wanna update but i am really afraid of trying it now since i have read through some threads that updating or restoring your phone now could mean a possible locked iphone forever. I dont live in the US. I'd be happy with 3.1.2 but im afraid whether upgrade to 3.1.2 or not. Some people also say that it is safe to save SHSH files first before updating. But, i dont see threads/videos on how to save it for iphone running 2.1 version. most videos are for 3.1.3 and up.. mine is only running 2.1.. can someone help me on this? thanks a lot..

Reply

LoneWOlf September 11, 2010 at 20:02

hi there..you can easily update ur phone to 3.1.2 or even 3.1.3 without the SHSH..the SHSH files or for 3gs only..3g phones dont have that
get itunes,,get the 3.1.3..get IREB to kick ur phone out of the loop recovery..restore your phone on 3.1.3 from itunes.. then jailbreak it on redsnow 0.9.4 with 3.1.2..and voila! ur done..i can assist you if you want

i've decrypted the iOS4.1 filesystem and i'm comparing files with the jailbreak structure just to see whats corrupted the phone app(icon), cydia(crashing), app installs, slide to power off(re-spring), theres alot more security features built into the 4.1 but i'm assuming it could be easily fixed by deleting / modifying a few launch daemons for example com.apple.CommCenter.plist which redsn0w modify's, there are a few others but i think i've detailed enough, oh yeah and the decrypt keys have been posted around so it wont be too long before the official jailbreak will be released.

FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE HAVING TROUBLE RESTORING FORCE DFU THEN RESTORE to force it plugin in iphone, hold both power and home button until screen goes black then release the power button and still hold the home button for another 20 seconds. Lauch iTunes and it will force a restore, trust me i had the exact problem!!!!!!

the only way to save your phone that i know of is to put your phone into dfu mode, then before connecting it yo itunes hold down your home button and plug it in at the same time,u then will atleast put your phone back to normal.

This software is a waste of my time today. managed to jailbreak but unable to make phone calls and furthermore, the phone icon is deleted too. Notice that you cannot even off your phone because it will automatically on back by its own. developer pls do something about this before dissiminating this kinna misleading info. wastage of time. any one who did this method will also find out that when you try to restore your phone to factory settings through itunes, you will get an error like 1620. which mean that you cannot restore from i tunes. I did some research and found a way to save my phone already. download the ipsw firmware that you are using currently and restore your phone back to factory settings.. but before that open itune and set your phone to DFU mode. then hols on to the sift button and find that ipsw file that you just download and its done!!!

i've been digging into the file structure of 4.1 and this is probably due to the fact that the firmware 4.0.1 and most likely 4.0.2 have plists configured based on the 4.0 firmware, and the jailbreak files would be the same (configured on the 4.0), you cant exactly expect this to operate correctly when this is the info inside the plists, if i knew where all the jailbreak files on the iphone were stored i would most likely change this

<key>DTPlatformVersion</key>
<string>4.1 GM</string>
<key>DTSDKName</key>
<string>iphoneos4.1.internal</string>
<key>DTXcode</key>
<string>0324</string>
<key>MinimumOSVersion</key>
<string>4.1</string>

These frameworks are not working with this method of jailbreak…

Security.framework,
ImageIO.framework,
IOMobileFrameworbuffer.framework,
CoreFoundation.framework,
CoreSurface.framework.
CoreGraphics.framework,
IOKit.framework

I'm testing to see if any changes fix this.
