Finally, Apple has released iPhone 4.1 firmware after one week as promised at 1st September’s Apple Event. iPhone 4.1 update is specially worthy for iPhone 3G users who have been experiencing performance issues since iPhone 4.0 firmware. Steve has revealed before the event that 4.1 update will fix the buggy operation of iOS 4.0 on iPhone 3G.
Warning: Some people are complaining that there is no Phone App after using redsn0w. Proceed at your own risk. This only works successfully with beta.
Update: Sn0wbreeze 2.0 will be released in a day or two and will jailbreak 3G 4.1 without problems. So wait for the release and don’t try this SOLUTION

iPhone 4.1 update has been available since months as it was being seeded to developers who can also test the changes being brought and also get feedback for iPhone 3G performance issue. Since iPhone 3G has old bootrom which can be easily jailbroken and Apple hasn’t patched it, iPhone 3G is “Pwned4life”.
Redsn0w has been traditionally able to jailbreak iPhone 3G and same is the case iPhone 3G 4.1 running on. Redsn0w 0.9.5 supports to jailbreak iPhone 3G since 4.0 firmware and jailbreaking iPhone 3G 4.1 is no issue.
Note: If you rely on ultrasn0w unlock, you SHOULD NOT update to iPhone 3G to 4.1 firmware as ultrasn0w exploit has been patched in 4.1 firmware. You would lose your unlock until Hackers manage a way to downgrade the baseband on iPhone 3G 4.1 or a new baseband exploit is found. You can still jailbreak iPhone 3G.
Here is a step by step tutorial on how to jailbreak iPhone 3G running 4.1 firmware. Before moving, you will need following material.
Download iOS 4.0 for iPhone 3G
Download iOS 4.1 for iPhone 3G
Download redsn0w 0.9.5
Download redsn0w 0.9.6
Step 1: Your iPhone 3G should be running 4.1 firmware if it is not then update first to 4.1.
Step 2: Execute redsn0w and select “Browse”. You have to select 4.0 firmware 4.1 firmware to proceed. [Remember it is 4.0 firmware]
Step 3: Continue by selecting Next and redsn0w will start preparing jailbreak data for iPhone.
Step 4: Now, select “Install Cydia” along with other options you want to enable on iPhone running 4.1.
Step 5: Turn off your iPhone and plug in the device to computer.
Step 6: You have to bring DFU mode on iPhone .
- Hold Power button and while holding Power button Hold Home Button for 10 seconds.
- After Few seconds release Power button while still Holding Home Button.
- Release Home button when Installation begins.
Step 7: Your part is done and let redsn0w do the remaining. After installation is finished, iPhone will restart automatically. You have a jailbroken iPhone 3G running 4.1 firmware.
Note: If you see a white Cydia App it can be fixed as follows
Load the app and go to Manage>Sources>Add and add the following source http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7

Those who attempted this jailbreak for their 3G on 4.1 using redsn0w pointing to the 4.0 firmware, I got the phone app icon displayed but crashes on load the file that needs patching is the telephony framework in systemlibraryframework locate the telephony framework (CoreTelephony.framework) and in that folder there's a support folder and in that folder there's a file called commcenter, this file will most likely have to be patched when the official greenpois0n jailbreak is released, I played around with this framework copying one I decrypted off 4.0.2 among editing the plist's including the app itself, certain code still prevents it from loading, so im missing something

help me……..please… my 3G iphone hs passcode, after I upgrade to 4.1 and then jailbreak it with redsnow_win_0.95b5-5, it still cannot work, when try to connect with itunes, error popup said that my device had been protected by passcode, please enter the passcode and try again… I have to unlock my iphone using ultrasnow 1st, but if I cannot jailbreak it, how???
Works except the wifi is very unstable… it keeps switching back and forth from Not Connected to network name… so I can’t get to fixing Cydia white icon part :/ I can’t even browse. Please help.

I had the same issue with the Missing Phone Icon. Turns out i was using the 4.0 IPSW to jailbreak. Use the 4.1. Still cannot unlock though. My Iphone is just an Ipod currently.
Just relax…isn’t it so easy to restore everything on your iPhone, and this jailbreak is working with iPhone 3g quite good, if you are not loading lots of shit from cydia. Worked with phone icon, until I’ve downloaded zToggle for the 3g and enabled SB wallpaper.
This what you can do with this JB: install Cydia, enable multitasking, download Installous…making some more moves (as for me) killing phone app.

that is because the firmware you are adding on redsn0w is NOT the same firmware you have on the Iphone already downloade tinyumbrella and put the iphone to DFU mode and go to itunes hold down SHIFT (if you are a windows user) and hold down ALT (if you are a mac user) and restore the same firmware you will jailbreak in redsn0w. This should work

My iPhone 3G 4.1 is in DFU mode. I am not able to restore. I tried to restore through iTunes but no activity on the phone and error message comes. Phone is like dead with connetct iTunes sign when swithed on.

Hello,
I have a Iphone 3g that is locked to AT&T. Unfortunately, I clicked un the update in Itunes and the phone is now showing the emergency call page. I tried Sn0wbreeze in the past, but it did not worked. Now I tried RedSn0w, I completed all the steps, but at the end, I'm still at the emergency call page. After all these trials, I do not know which IOS version do I have on my IPHONE. Is there a way to figure this out?
