Hi Ferdo, you need a AT&T or cingular sim card (IT CAN BE OLD AT&T or CINGULAR SIM CARD). Insert the simcard, then open Itunes to activate the the phone. After that you can use Safari to get online and jailbreak the phone.
Not necessarily, I jailbroke my iPhone with t-mobile sim card and it wasn’t unlocked either. Although I unlocked it right after.and the whole time my t-mobile sim is in it.

Confirmed works, i had jb 3.1.2 3gs blackra1n, updated to 4.0.1, then did this, works like majic, much apriciated, ill give some some to the author for this on my next paycheck
worked a treat on my missus. took me less than 5mins to jailbreak and unlock. then tried to do mine and it kept crashing/shutting safari and go back to springboard
Ok, my apologies to everyone. I've been locked again after midnight (from 08/01 to 08/02) because I switch provider with the same phone number. So my old Sim Card was deactivated, that's why I was "locked" again. To be clear, you can unlock your 3GS (new bootrom since mine is MC model) with ultrasn0w 0.93.

If you have a 3gs you can buy a used AT&T simcard from ebay and then you can access the browser and jailbreak.
