first restore and update to 4.0.1 with itunes 9.2.1
once restored activate with att sim or other hactivation
visit http://www.jailbreakme.com and slide to jailbreak
once done open cydia and install ultrasnow
after rebooting you can insert new sim and bingo you are done.
My MC 3Gs runs much faster with a restore and update rather than just updating to 4.0.1 from 3.1.3 Spirit JB.
i have not att sim how to hacktivate my 3gs 4.0.1 new bootrom ?
You need an official Sim. Hacktivation is not supported in JailbreakMe
I was trying to restore on itunes to upgrade to 4.0.1 from an ipsw file I downloaded (Mine is a 3GS on 3.1.3 on a Non Official carrier) and iTunes repeatedly says I cant do it. Please Help…

You will need an official sim card. You can buy a used one from ebay, I have bought one and am waiting for it to arrive.
You'll only need the sim card to access the browser for this jailbreak and then your one step away from using your iphone.

Question: I have a iPhone 4, firmware 1.59.00, OS 4.0.1. The phone has been activated with an AT&T sim. I am now overseas and would like to use Jailbreak and ultrasnow to use the iPhone with my local carrier.

I have the same problem. I jB fine with "Jailbreakme" my 3GS with 4.0.1 and then unlocked with utrasn0w 1.1-1 to use my vodafone card. Everything ok (even did a phone call). But then, a bit later it never gave me signal anymore. Installed the Hacktivation Patch, but still doesnt give me any signal!!

I jailbreaked before my 3GS after update to 4.0.1 successfully.
after some days i decided to restore iOS 4.0.1 due to crash of springboard due (i suppose) to the contemporary presence of backgrounder and fast switching application.
After restore of factory defaults i tried three times jailbreak with jailbreakme.com but i receive the same messagge you got, and Safari now crash if I try to jailbreak again.

I have the 3GS, version 4.0.1 (8A306); firmware 05.13.04 and this tool works perfectly. Thanks for the awesome tool!
1) open your Safari and type in http://www.jailbreakme.com follow instructions.
2) ensure that your iPhone is connected to the internet via WiFi
3) opens Cydia —> Manage —> Sources —> and choose repo666.ultrasn0w.com and install it (confirm it too).
4) your phone should ask you to reboot, after reboot, it should be unlocked. My works fine on tmobile …. everything works!

Cydia crashed and the Iphone deleted it, Everything works fine but how can i get it back?? I bought one iPhone of model 3gs. At the moment I m using OS version 4.0.1 (8A306). When I got connected with iTunes it says a latest OS version 4.3.4 is available to update. I do not update this latest version OS on the hunch that I may loose all the data like phone no, pictures, video songs etc which are now loaded in the Iphone. Please advice.
