There are two prominent types of jailbreak exploits. One type is developed after hacking iPhone bootrom. These exploits are long lasting as Apple cannot patch them by upgrading iOS only. Instead, they have to replace the bootrom in the upcoming iPhone or iPod Touch which may normally take around 1 year. But hacking bootrom is a rather tough task and takes a longer period. Almost all prominent jailbreaking are based on these exploits.

The other type of jailbreak is developed using Apple’s firmware and does not rely on iBoot/Bootrom exploits. Spirit Jailbreak is the most popular and prominent tool of this kind. As it does not depend upon bootrom, it can jailbreak all iDevices irrespective of bootrom version. The latest version of Spirit Jailbreak works for iPhone 3GS 3G iPod Touch 3G 2G on 3.1.3 firmware and iPad on 3.2 firmware. With the release of iTunes 9.2, Apple patched the loophole and it no longer works with recent version of iTunes.
@comex is the iPhone Hacker, who actually found the exploit and released Spirit Jailbreak. This time, he has again struck and found another userland exploit which can jailbreak iOS 4/4.0 on iPhone 4. There are strong chances that comex will release an updated version of Spirit to jailbreak iOS 4/4.0 on iPhone 4 3GS 3G and iPod Touch 3G 2G. In short, Spirit Jailbreak 4.0 will jailbreak all iDevices except iPad on iOS4 for the time being. There is no expected release date because the code has to be refined as it contains proprietary code by Apple.
Using this userland Jailbreak , @planetbeing was the first person to get root access to iPhone 4. He has made further progress and decrypted iPhone 4 bootrom which is really exciting. It looks like that a bunch of new tools will emerge to jailbreak iPhone 4.

Jesus all I here is whinge whinge whinge. If it's so bloody easy why aren't you lot doing it. If you read the article they are waiting to see if apple are patching in 4.1. The comments and ungrateful behaviour I am witnessing here are the reason geohot got out the game.
If you have no patience sell your bleedin iPhones buy an android and let us who are appreciative benefit from the hard work being put into spirit.
