PwnageTool 4.0 has been released by iPhone Dev Team. Probably, they released it because some sort of unofficial PwnageTool 4.0 were roaming around and they might even brick iPhone. Therefore, it is the right time to release PwnageTool 4.0 so that users can easily jailbreak iPhone 3GS 3G and iPod Touch 2G on iOS 4. Remember, PwnageTool is traditionally released for MAC and same is happening this time. Only, MAC users can get benefit from PwnageTool 4.0.
PwnageTool 4.0 will cook custom iOS 4 firmware for your iPhone which will be restored to iPhone using iTunes.
Compatibility Note:
iPhone 3G
- If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3G at 3.1.2 (but not jailbroken with Spirit) then you should create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore from recovery mode or DFU mode.
- If you have an out of the box iPhone 3G you should restore using a PwnageTool 4.0 ipsw using DFU mode.
- If you have a Jailbroken 3.1.3 iPhone 3G it is very possible that this can fail from recovery mode, if this failure happens you will need to restore using DFU mode.
IMPORTANT! Whenever you need to enter DFU mode, you will need to do so using PwnageTool.
iPhone 3GS
Summary: PwnageTool only works on previously jailbroken 3GS devices with the old bootrom.
- If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the OLD BOOTROM and you DID NOT use Spirit to jailbreak then you can create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore with recovery mode.
If you have an iPhone 3GS with the NEW BOOTROM this is NOT supported by PwnageTool 4.0
Before proceeding with iOS 4 jailbreak, please read the official instruction again and again and again.
Function 1: Make sure that latest version of iTunes is running.
Function 2: Download PwnageTool 4.0 and respective iOS 4 [ipsw] for your iPhone 3GS or 3G. Keep these files within same folder.
Function 3: Start PwnageTool 4.0 and select your device.
Function 4: PwnageTool 4.0 will automatically detect the correct iOS 4 [ipsw] for your iPhone 3GS or 3G or you can browser to locate it.
Function 5: If you are not on official carrier, then select “No” in the prompt which asks about contract. You can opt for “Yes” if you are on official carrier like AT&T.
Function 6: PwnageTool 4.0 will now prepare a custom iOS 4 firmware for iPhone 3GS and 3G.
Function 7: Now follow PwnageTool 4.0 instruction to restore this custom iOS 4 firmware either in Restore Mode or DFU Mode depending upon whether you are already jailbroken or not. These instruction can also be found in above mention “Compatibility Note”.
How To Unlock iOS 4:
Once you are jailbroken, you can Unlock iOS 4 iPhone 3GS using ultrasn0w 0.93.
