Recently, Apple has previewed iPod Touch 4.0 firmware and beta version is available until WWDC 2010. Upgrading to iPod Touch 4.0 firmware surely have made you jailbreak and you have a less functional iPod Touch. There is some good news for users who are looking to jailbreak iPod Touch 4.0 as there is some solid proof.  Till the availability of any jailbreak tool, users can downgrade their iPod Touch 3G/2G to an earlier firmware like 3.1.3/31.2. Here is an illustrated guide to assist you in downgrading iPod Touch 4.0 firmware to some previous firmware.

Function 1: Latest iTunes must be installed on your system.

Function 2: Attach iPod Touch to computer and turn it off. Now you have to start iPod Touch on 4.0 firmware in DFU mode.

  • Press and hold the Home button and the Power button at the same time for 10 seconds.
  • Release Power button while holding the Home button until system recognizes iPod Touch [3G/2G].
  • Soon after iTunes will recognize you iPod Touch [3G/2G] as well.

Function 3: To downgrade iPod Touch 4.0, press option key [Shift on Windows] or [Alt on Mac] and click restore after selecting iPod Touch in iTunes sidebar. Then direct the iTunes to the location where firmware 3.1.3 or 3.1.2 exist. Relax, it will take 10-15 minutes to downgrade iPod Touch 2G/3G on 4.0 firmware.

Caution: If an error message like 1011, 1013, 1015 is encountered, ignore it.

Function 4: Download iRecovery for Windows or Mac. [Mac users should skip to Function 5]

  • Windows users should install libusb filter before executing iRecovery. If you are on Windows 7, install this as Administrator and by selecting compatibility mode as ‘Windows XP (SP 2)’

Funtion 5: Mac users should start terminal and Windows users should start command prompt. Then navigate to the directory where iRecovery exists and execute it with following command and proceed as instructed

irecovery -s

setenv auto-boot true

saveenv

reboot

Function 6: Restart your iPod Touch (Press and hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds).

Caution: If an error message like 1601, 1602, 1600 is encountered, start again from function 2.

If everything goes smoothly then you must be successful in downgrading iPod Touch 4.0 firmware to 3.1.3/3.1.2 firmware.

It didn’t work. I updated my 3g iPod touch to 4.0 and want to downgrade to 3.1.3. I tried to choose the proper .ipsw file thru iTunes 9.2 and then it tried to restore by saying “Verifying iPod restore with Apple…” but suddenly thrown an error as “The iPod could not be restored. This device isn’t eligible for the requested build”. Then as mentioned here, i downloaded irecovery and tried in terminal. First, i enter ./iRecovery -s it said ‘No iPod/iPhone found’ even though my iPod is connected properly without dfu mode. Then i tried giving ‘setenv auto-boot true’ , it says command not found. I don’t understand what should i do? I’m struggling a lot downgrading my 3g iPod touch from 4.0 to 3.1.3.

I had the same thing and while I am by any means an expert on this I do have a theory. The instructions say that the firmware install should take 10-15 mins, but because ours takes such a relatively small amount of time I think that iTunes is merely unpacking the firmware package (as it says in the window while this is taking place) and then signing the firmware with Apple BEFORE it actually gets installed on the iPod. Apple must have gotten wise to the fact that people were able to manually remove the device from recovery mode before the firmware was verified allowing most instructions you see on the net to work. If possible, I'm going to try and find a way of getting an older version of iTunes installed that will use the old process of unpacking->installing->checking. It shouldn't matter that iTunes can't recognize 4.0 if the device is in DFU mode anyway. I'll let you know if it works.

Have the same problem, seems there's something to do with itunes 9.2 but then 4.0 is not compatible with anything other than itunes 9.2 so it's hopeless

@john You’ve got to be kidding me. At 50 you know a lot. NOT AT TWELVE. Besides, if you “know a lot”, don’t you know about a little thing called “spelling”? You sure don’t know that!

@f***it When you enter DFU (aka recovery aka “the Connect to iTunes screen”) mode you’re essentially preparing your iPod touch for a complete wipe and system reinstall. So, and I’m really sorry to say this, unless you had iTunes back up your data before entering DFU mode, you’ve lost everything not in your iTunes library (notes, new apps, new songs, new videos…).
