For the very first time, Apple has released a beta version for iPhone firmware 4.0 unlike their previous trends. Earlier, they used to release a stable version of iPhone firmware. Probably, it is because they have made some productive changes in iPhone firmware 4.0 and they want to make sure the stability of features before a public release. The prominent capabilities introduced in iPhone 4.0 are multitasking, folders support, and freedom to change wallpapers for Home and Lock screen. Some of these features in iPhone firmware 4.0 will not be available for iPhone 3G users while iPhone 2G users will not be able to upgrade their iPhone OS to 4.0 at all. Besides these reasons, lack of tethering and support to access a large number of unofficial apps will still pursue iPhone 3GS/3G and probably iPhone 4G users to jailbreak iPhone 4.0.
iPhone-Dev-Team has also refreshed lineup of their tools with redsn0w 0.9.5 to jailbreak iPhone OS 4.0. redsn0w jailbreak has already been successful to breach previous versions of iPhone OS and the same exploit is being used this time. Currently beta version of redsn0w 0.9.5 is available for download which has been released for developers to make their apps ready for jailbroken iPhone 4.0.
Caution: In order to activate, you need to have UDID which is issued to developers who are registered with Apple. You will also be longer able to unlock or hacktivate iPhone on the upgraded baseband firmware. So proceed with extra care if you are a normal iPhone user.
You need to execute following functions one by one in order to jailbreak 4.0 on iPhone 3G. [Only]
Function 1: Download iPhone firmware 4.0 beta and redsn0w 0.9.5.
Function 2: Upgrade to the latest firmware.
Function 3: Run redsn0w 0.9.5 and direct it to the genuine firmware 4.0 for iPhone 3G.
Function 4: Then chose ‘Install Cydia’ and proceed by clicking ‘Next’.
Function 5: Connect iPhone 3G to computer and turn it off.
Function 6: You have to start iPhone in recovery mode as follows
- Press and hold the Home button and the Power (Sleep/Wake) button at the same time.
- Release Power button after few seconds while holding the Home button until installation initiates.
Function 7: Leave the rest to redsn0w 0.9.5 and relax. After the jailbreak is done, iPhone will get a restart automatically and you will have a jailbroken iPhone 3G running on iPhone firmware 4.0.
