GoogSysTray: A System Tray Notifier for Google Applications

Google-Apps Google Applications like Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Voice, and Google Reader are widely used nowadays. They provide a flexible solution for routine tasks like email and schedule management. GoogleLabs had released an official Gmail Notifier which sits in system tray and notifies of any new email. This Notifier had really eased the way of checking new email instead of logging again and again into your Gmail account to check whether a new email has arrived. But there are no official solutions for other Google Application like Google Calendar, Google Voice, and Google Reader.

GoogSysTray is an application which provides a solution to get system tray notification

of Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Voice and Google Reader. It provides an intuitive interface to configure and access these Google Applications while minimizing them to System Tray. Installing and configuring this utility is an easy task. After downloading and installing GoogSysTray when you will launch the application, following configuration settings are displayed.

Enter your login details like username and password for Google Applications. Now you can choose different options like auto start on log in and always show icon. The choice listed under “On Click” bar will remain same for all Applications except that URL for each Application will get changed. Under this bar, you can select one of the following alternatives

  • No Action (Nothing will happen when you click any Google Application icon in System Tray).
  • Open URL in Browser (Launches Google Application URL in Default Browser).
  • Open URL in New Window (Launches Google Application in a New Window Default Browser).
  • Open URL in New Tab (Launches Google Application in a New Tab of Default Browser).

Further, you can opt to run any other command of your choice by selecting and completing “Run another Command” field.

In respective tabs of Google Applications, you can turn on or off any Application according to your requirements and also choose to display Application icon. The tabs also let you select whether to play a sound or not when any update occurs. The other option to execute an action by clicking Google Application icon is same as described above.

It is really a handful utility that minimizes your load to check for updates periodically in Google Applications.  It just loads into system tray and notifies whenever there is any update in one of these Google Applications i.e. Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Reader, and Google Voice.
