So its native support in Windows Media Player is among one of the prime reason of its widespread. Iriverter is a free and open source video converter which is platform independent i.e. it can be run on Windows, Linux, and OS-X. Here, it is only covered for Windows XP. It can convert MKV (Matroska Video), MPEG, Ogg, Quicktime, WMV, and Real videos to AVI video. As it uses Mencoder, it also supports conversion of other video file formats.

The interface is really clean and nicely designed.  It lets you choose whether to convert a Single Video, Multiple Video in a Folder, or a DVD. You can insert as many video conversion jobs. You can modify the audio and video bit rate from options menu. Iriverter has also the option to split and join AVI videos. The option is available in the Job>Advanced menu. Finally, if your audio and video is not synchronized, you can adjust audio before or after.
