You have got multiple files to rename, say a hundred e.g. you are copying a MP3 DVD and got to rename it. You are using Windows; find a way out to do this Batch Rename that fits with your extra requirements. You will get tired and find no built-in solution to “Batch Rename Files”. I recently encountered such a situation and found this Free and Open Source solution to rename Multiple Files in Windows.
Metamorphose File -n- Folder Renamer is a cross platform utility to rename multiple files and folders in bulk. It is a professional tool that comes up with a great solution to many problems. Its pliant nature and insightful interface is also suitable for photo and music collections. Its allows you to load all files within a folder and subfolders, take a foretaste before a piece is renamed, undo renaming actions, and renaming of mp3 and image files with respect to their ID3 tags and Exif tags respectively. After downloading and installation,
1. You will be asked to choose language. After language selection you have to set preferences and will be presented with following screen.
a. Check to show hidden folders or left unchecked.
b. Select your audio tags encoding if different from System Default.
2. In display tab, choose preview adjustment according to your requirement. You can choose to thumbnail those files that have to be renamed or all files. Further, you can choose to highlight renamed file. Leave remaining two options as default.
3. The third tab which is automate lets you choose whether to load all contents of a directory or the user will choose which items should be loaded. Further you can opt to reload contents after renaming, keep log of operations, automatic error log display after an action.
4. One of the remaining two tabs is Logging which gives option to choose directory where logs are kept. Last tab is Error Checks and it should be let unchanged.
5. After this you will see Picker Tab in main window. This tab really provides a flexibility to load files you required.
a. You can choose to upload a Folder by clicking Browse or Side Pan. Now, you have option to select files to which you want to apply an operation. By default, all files are selected. You can choose multiple files by simply left click. You also can select whether to load files or subdirectory.
b. It is also possible to choose only image files, video files, audio files, office files and etc. from the drop down menu below browse field. By checking the box “Not Containing”, before this menu you opt to include all other files except those type of files chosen in drop down menu.
6. Now, move on to Renamer Tab of Metamorphose. It will show you that no operations are defined and also a one line detail of each operation. Select the operation according to your choice. In this example, I choose insert operation. I choose to insert Metamorphose_ before every file and I get a live preview how Files are being renamed and then press Go! To finish.
a. You can choose to add numbering, date, and time in every file’s name. The setting of numbering, date, and time can also be altered.
b. If you want to add attributes to audio files, you can select from audio info drop down. Similarly, you can also add attributes to image files from image info dropdown.
7. The Sorting tab lets you sort multiple files easily in an ascending, descending, or manual fashion.
I must say that it is the strongest free utility that can easily rename multiple files with lot of flexibility.
